Communications Specialist

The Ontario First Nations Technical Services Corporation (OFNTSC) is a nonprofit organization that provides technical advisory services, training, and capacity development to First Nations communities in Ontario. By offering a wide range of specialized services and expertise, OFNTSC helps to enhance the quality of life, promote technical self-sufficiency, and foster economic growth within these communities.
We seek a highly motivated and skilled Communications Specialist to join our team at OFNTSC. Under the guidance of the Communications Manager, the Communications Specialist will play a crucial role in supporting internal and external communications efforts, enhancing the visibility of our work, and ensuring consistent, clear, and culturally sensitive messaging. This position requires a strong communications background, managing multiple deadlines, and occasional travel.
These tasks must be executed in alignment with the culture and values of OFNTSC while maintaining strict confidentiality.
Responsibilities:
- Write and edit high-quality content for press releases, newsletters, reports, website updates, social media, and other communication platforms.
- Manage media inquiries, cultivate positive relationships with journalists, facilitate media interviews, and prepare media briefings.
- Develop and distribute internal updates via the monthly staff newsletter, prepare announcements for staff, and help foster clear communication across the organization.
- Ensure all communications reflect and respect Indigenous values, traditions, and perspectives.
- Help plan and promote events such as conferences, workshops, and community outreach programs (e.g., Technical Youth Career Outreach Program-TYCOP).
- Support the Communications Manager in developing crisis communication plans and responding to sensitive situations.
- To ensure effective communication and collaboration and foster positive relationships with Indigenous communities, mentors, and partners.
- Create and distribute marketing materials, including brochures, flyers, and promotional items.
- Assist in preparing reports on communication activities and event outcomes for internal and external stakeholders.
- Assist with the development, implementation, and modification of a regional engagement communications plan.
Qualifications:
- Degree or diploma in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Marketing, or a related field.
- 3-5 years of experience in communications or event planning, preferably within a non-profit or Indigenous organization.
- Understanding Indigenous cultures, traditions, and issues facing Indigenous youth is an asset.
- Proficiency in Google Suite, Asana, and Microsoft Office Suite and familiarity with graphic design software (e.g., Canva) are assets.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with proficiency in social media platforms, digital marketing tools, and attention to detail.
- Strong organizational and multitasking abilities and ability to work independently or within a team.
- Strong interpersonal skills, proactive and positive attitude, and the ability to build relationships with diverse groups.
- Commitment to promoting Indigenous youth career development and technical skills.
Conditions:
- Full-time position (8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.), Monday to Friday, with occasional evenings and weekends depending on event schedules.
- Reliable and insured vehicle with a valid Class G Ontario driver's license.
- Some out-of-town travel is required throughout the province of Ontario.
