We went seeking advice in past recessions, to see what lessons can be applied to the present.<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>Recession or not, the next months will be hard for job hunters. Companies will be experiencing a second lock-down.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>1. Find interest in growing sectors and in emerging needs<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>In an article published <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cio.com\/article\/2449480\/10-secrets-for-searching-for-a-job-during-a-recession.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">at the dawn of the 2008 recession<\/a>, Mark Cummuta, founder, Triumph CIO Group, advised professionals to \u00ab choose a company before a job title \u00bb and to \u00ab focus their efforts on growing industries \u00bb as well as \u00ab labour needs \u00bb.<\/p>\n<p>Following this piece of advice, one can create a first list of \u00ab target \u00bb companies \u00bb, picking companies from essential services that will be maintained no matter what, and no matter the strength of the second wave.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>2. Clarify what you can bring to a company<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>While answering <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lexpress.fr\/emploi\/conseils-emploi\/comment-trouver-un-emploi-en-temps-de-crise_859672.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Express<\/a> readers\u2019 questions in 2010, Edouard-Nicolas Dubar, author of <i>Comment trouver un emploi en temps de crise<\/i> (How to find a job during a crisis), he explained what differentiates a period of growth to a period of crisis for a company.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00ab\u00a0During a period of economic prosperity, he explains, companies will look for candidates with potential and will take the time to train them. During a crisis, they will look for candidates that are available right away, that are operational, focusing less on diplomas and short-term evolution potential. [&#8230;] They will look for \u201cfire-fighter\u201d profiles, capable of taking action in a hurry and with a level head. \u00bb<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Knowing this, we understand the importance of making a good assessment of our own skills before offering our services to a company.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.ca\/books?id=nV3KEdM2O2cC&amp;pg=PT21&amp;dq=r%C3%A9cession+trouver+un+job&amp;hl=fr&amp;sa=X&amp;ved=2ahUKEwjEzrez0qLsAhVndt8KHdQPAQIQ6AEwAXoECAQQAg#v=onepage&amp;q=r%C3%A9cession%20trouver%20un%20job&amp;f=false\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to Get a Job in a Recession<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Denise Taylor, the author, goes a step further, suggesting that job hunters should complete a \u00ab skills audit \u00bb and while they are it, might seek extra training to perfect a skill in demand as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>3. Make yourself useful<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the same time, several companies are in panic-mode and probably don\u2019t have the time for elaborate hiring procedures while in need of immediate labour.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They need to fill in the gaps, put fires out and will look for a lot of flexibility on the part of hired ressources.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This second finding brings us to one of Ronald Torch\u2019s advice, President of a marketing hiring firm in Cleveland, who said, during the 2011 recession :<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00ab Consider hiring an interim to fill a temporary position whose work needs to be done despite the slowing economy. Or approach a company that interests you, no matter the position. When the economy picks up, new roles will become available. \u00bb<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><strong>4. Don\u2019t take it \u00ab personally \u00bb<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are currently looking for a job, it\u2019s probably because you have been laid off recently. On top of that, there is a strong chance that you have already had other job applications turned down.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In her book, Denise Taylor invites job seekers not to take refusals \u00ab\u00a0personally \u00bb.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00ab You can certainly take some time to grieve a job. At the same time, you need to know how to let go quickly enough, or else you will waste your ressources.
