That\u2019s one of the findings of the latest labour market report released in June by Randstad. We spoke with Andr\u00e9 Perron, Randstad\u2019s Senior Director of Talent Solutions, about this surprising trend.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the report, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.randstad.ca\/fr\/salle-de-nouvelles\/travailleurs-canadiens-prevoient-changer-d-emploi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2026 Employer Brand Research<\/a><\/em>, 42% of Canadian Gen Z workers\u2014those born between 1997 and 2012\u2014said they intended to change jobs within the next six months, either by moving to another position within their current organization (12%) or by leaving for another employer (30%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The contrast is striking: across all respondents, only 23% said they intended to change jobs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s a record level of mobility,\u201d warns Andr\u00e9 Perron. \u201cIt\u2019s a red flag on employers\u2019 dashboards and should prompt serious reflection on the challenge of retaining these new workers.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2>Flexibility Isn\u2019t Everything<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Young adults are not as focused on flexibility (38%) as Millennials and Gen X workers (43%), according to the report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They generally don\u2019t have children or a mortgage to worry about, and they aren\u2019t necessarily looking for stability or work-life balance at any cost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cIf they don\u2019t see a path for advancement, if there\u2019s no clarity about what the next steps might look like within their company, that\u2019s when they tend to move on,\u201d says the Randstad executive.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2>A Gap Between Expectations and Employer Performance<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Limited career growth is indeed the most frequently cited reason for wanting to leave, mentioned by 35% of younger workers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That raises another question: could there be an element of bluffing in these survey responses\u2014after all, saying you intend to leave doesn\u2019t necessarily mean you actually will?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>In Canada, intentions to change jobs continue to outpace actual job changes, the report notes. This \u201cindicates continued pressure on retention, although these intentions have eased compared with last year. Workers are more likely to consider leaving when gaps persist between their expectations and their current employer\u2019s performance.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The report also notes that only 14% of workers actually changed jobs during the last six months of 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>The \u201cPortfolio Career\u201d Approach<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The desire for mobility is particularly striking in a global context where a growing number of companies have decided to replace some junior positions with AI agents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the same time, this drive to diversify may be less about restlessness than a survival instinct pushing the younger generation to broaden its professional experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cThis is a generation that has adopted something of a \u2018portfolio career\u2019 strategy,\u201d explains Andr\u00e9 Perron. \u201cThey want to build a diverse range of experiences, experiment with new companies and new roles, and develop a broader professional skill set rather than growing in a linear fashion within a single organization.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>This is also a generation searching for its place\u2014and for meaning\u2014in the workplace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In another survey conducted by Employment Hero in November 2026, 46% of Gen Z workers said they were not working in their \u201cdesired\u201d field.
