POSITION OVERVIEW

The Manager of Brand Communications plays a critical role in advancing the mission and goals of Birds Canada. This position will oversee Birds Canada's brand guidelines across all channels and help establish digital marketing best practices that expand Birds Canada's reach and deepen engagement with our audience. With both a creative eye and proven track record, the Manager of Brand Communications will develop, implement, and optimize digital marketing campaigns across a variety of digital platforms including web, Google analytics, SEO, SEM, remarketing, and email marketing. This position actively contributes to Birds Canada's Mobilizing People in Canada program area, and as such, is responsible to engage our target audiences.

EMPLOYMENT DETAILS

This full-time role reports to the Vice-President of Communications & Engagement and can be performed fully remotely from anywhere in Canada, however a hybrid arrangement is possible for those who are local to one of our physical offices (Port Rowan, ON; Sackville, NB, and Delta, BC). There is a possibility of infrequent travel for team meetings within Canada. The anticipated start date for this role is mid-late August 2024.

TOTAL COMPENSATION

Birds Canada is proud to offer an exceptional Total Compensation Package, including a competitive starting salary and 5% RRSP matching after 12 months of service. In addition, staff enjoy a primarily employer-paid extended benefits package including health and dental coverage, Basic Group Life Insurance, Group out-of-province travel insurance, Vision, ADD&D and short- and long-term disability coverage. We offer all staff 4 weeks' vacation per year to start along with 12 personal health days and additional paid vacation days between Boxing Day and New Year's Day.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Brand Communications (35%)

  • Work with the VP of Communications and Engagement to create, implement, and curate brand guidelines across all platforms, providing guidance and support to the rest of the organization to ensure consistency of creative outputs.
  • Lead promotional plans for key brand initiatives and special events.
  • Work closely with the Director of Communications on effective ways to represent science communications across our channels.
  • Collaborate with Communications and Engagement team to develop and implement content across digital channels (social, web, email).

Digital Marketing (30%)

  • Develop a digital media plan that establishes best practices for the website, social media, and Google properties.
  • Lead website planning and execution, leading and reporting on Search Engine Optimization and Search Engine Marketing efforts.
  • Support data-informed decision-making across all platforms using analytical tools to track, monitor and optimize digital performance and all other audience-facing vehicles.
  • Oversee, in collaboration with the Fundraising team, the Engaging Network digital marketing tool and its effective use to provide data for decision-making, deepen engagement with supporters, ensure adoption of email functions across the organization and planning integration into calendar of promotional activities.

Lead Generation/Engagement and Fundraising (15%)

  • Lead acquisition strategies that reflect a supporter-centric approach, recognizing the tens of thousands of volunteers and donors who are at the heart of our work.
  • Collaborate with the fundraising team to support mass fundraising appeals to increase donations and engage audiences with our brand across multiple touchpoints within each calendar year.
  • Create email marketing campaigns that welcome, and deepen our subscriber lists including the welcome series and monthly e-newsletter
  • Support planning and implementation of sponsor recognition programs and activate corporate partnerships in a meaningful way.

Leadership (10%)

  • Lead, support, and manage a small team of communications staff and external consultants to produce high-quality branded content, mentoring and taking an active role in the internal team's professional development and taking responsibility for their team's performance management, including semi-annual work planning and performance assessment.
  • Assist with the determination of staffing needs and support the recruitment, hiring, and training of new staff.
  • Work with the VP of Communications & Engagement to determine and manage an appropriate budget for marketing efforts within the scope of the role.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND EXPERIENCE

  • Demonstrable skills that showcase creative thinking and knowledge of design landscape including; inspiring work, design trends and standards.
  • Experience delivering brand standards across communication channels including web, social, print, and signage.
  • Experience creating and executing content strategy within an interactive space, such as working on a large-scale website, and creating/editing content for multiple channels with ability to collaborate on projects spanning multiple departments.
  • Experience developing and delivering marketing campaigns on various channels and working with agencies.
  • Knowledge of publication processes, production, and pre-production.
  • Knowledge of the digital landscape including; web, email design, social, and emerging trends.
  • Working knowledge of CMS, and HTML is an asset.
  • Experience managing a team of professional staff providing mentorship, guidance, and personal/professional development support to others. Recognize the strengths & accomplishments of others in a meaningful way. Provide constructive guidance while allowing independence and creating growth opportunities.
  • Experience creating fundraising campaigns and appeals with proven results to attract new donors and convert existing audiences is a real asset.
  • Proven project management skills.
  • Experience Managing a project budget (Typically >$150k annually)
  • Experience delivering bilingual brand communication and/or bilingual in French would be a significant asset.

EDUCATION

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent professional experience of 5 years.
