COMMUNICATIONS MANAGER

Who We Are:

Heritage Park is Canada's largest living history museum and offers visitors a chance to experience life in Western Canada from the 1860s to the early 1950s. The Park features historical buildings, costumed interpreters, working antiques, and various exhibits that provide insight into the region's past.

Job Overview:

As the Communications Manager, lead comprehensive public and media relations strategies at Heritage Park, managing media inquiries, press releases, and spokesperson duties. Develop earned media relationships, organize press, influencer and key opinion leader events, and tours to enhance visibility. Execute crisis communication plans, collaborate cross-departmentally for cohesive messaging. Drive strategic communications, oversee multimedia content creation, and manage the editorial calendar. Spearhead social media strategies, integrate with marketing campaigns, and provide leadership to foster team growth and align with organizational goals

Responsibilities:

Communications

  • Develop and implement strategic communication plans that align with organizational goals and enhance brand visibility

  • Create compelling content for various platforms, including website, social media channels, and newsletters
  • Supervise the production of annual reports, and multimedia content, including videos, podcasts, and blogs, to engage target audiences effectively, ensuring consistency in messaging and branding across all communication channels
  • Guides Social Media Coordinator in creating impactful social media content and digital outreach
  • Collaborates across departments to support communication initiatives and publications (e.g., Interpretation, Finance, Fund Development, People & Culture, Business Development)
  • Manages and maintains Park's 30-90-day content calendar
  • Works with the Director of Marketing and executives to strengthen employee engagement activities

Social Media

  • Develop and implement social media strategies to increase brand visibility, grow audience engagement, and drive traffic to the organization's digital platforms

  • Create and curate engaging content for social media channels (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc.), including written, visual, and video content
  • Collaborate with the marketing team to integrate social media strategies with overall marketing campaigns and initiatives
  • Monitor and respond to audience comments, messages, and inquiries on social media platforms in a timely and engaging manner
  • Plan and execute social media campaigns and promotions aligned with marketing objectives; track and analyze campaign performance metrics

Public and Media Relations

  • Manage media relations, including responding to inquiries, drafting press releases, and coordinating interviews with organizational spokespeople

  • Act as the primary media spokesperson, representing us at media conferences and events
  • Develop and maintain relationships with journalists, editors, bloggers, and influencers to increase media coverage and amplify messaging
  • Plan and execute media events, press conferences, and tours to promote organizational initiatives and milestones
  • Monitor media coverage, prepare reports on impressions and sentiment, and track results of tourism media familiarization tours
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to develop key messages and talking points for media engagements
  • Work closely with Tourism Calgary and Travel Alberta to leverage media opportunities
  • Serve as a key spokesperson during crises, ensuring timely and effective communication to stakeholders
  • Develop crisis communication plans and protocols to manage and mitigate reputational risks

People Leadership

  • Lead by example by providing day-to-day support to direct reports to enhance expertise and professional growth

  • Foster a collaborative working environment by communicating clearly, delegating responsibilities, and recognizing team contributions
  • Mentor and support Social Media Coordinator in their professional development, offering guidance and opportunities for growth within the organization
  • Manage and Social Media Coordinator, delegating tasks and responsibilities as needed
  • Conduct regular check-ins and provide feedback to ensure that direct reports are meeting performance expectations and achieving objectives
  • Assess areas for development and provide open and respectful feedback in a timely fashion
  • Work with direct reports to create annual SMART goals and track and ensure regular communication for on-time goal delivery and completion
  • Analyze current processes and procedures and provide recommendations for process improvements, internal procedure changes and best practice applications to the Marketing and Special Events Director

  • Demonstrate responsible stewardship of our people, collections and financial assets by ensuring that they are handled with integrity, sustainability, and a focus on long-term benefits for the organization and its stakeholders
  • Post-secondary education in Marketing, Communications, Journalism, or a related field.

  • A minimum of 3-5 years prior experience with content strategy, marketing, or a related role is required. Proven experience in content strategy, content marketing, or a related role.
  • Minimum 2 years experience in marketing project management.
  • Minimum 1 years experience in people management, including recruitment and performance management.
  • Experience in a not-for-profit environment would be considered an asset
  • Medium to advanced level proficiency to utilize relevant technologies such as Asana, Office 365, Social Media sites, Adobe Acrobat and CMS (content management systems) like WordPress. Familiarity with AI marketing tools will be an asset.
  • Exceptional organizational skills and keen attention to detail are imperative
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills for effective engagement with clients, team members, vendors, and other stakeholders
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal and communication skills in a client-faced setting
  • All successful candidates (over the age of 18) will be required to go through a Police Information Check as a condition of employment.
