Tourism Marketing Director

Yellowknife, Northwest Territories

NWT Tourism, the Destination Marketing Organization for the Northwest Territories, is seeking a Marketing Director to help generate increased awareness of and visitation to the Northwest Territories from domestic and international markets.

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the incumbent is an integral member of the NWT Tourism management team. Leading a small team in Yellowknife, and working with General Sales Agents in Germany, Japan, China, and Australia, other contractors in international markets such as Mexico and Korea, and Destination Canada, the incumbent ensures both the development of and successful implementation of the Northwest Territories' marketing plan.

Scope:

  • Working with a range of stakeholders, researches, plans and co-ordinates the development and delivery of the NWT Tourism Marketing Plan and budget in collaboration with the Chief Executive Officer
  • Leads and oversees the implementation of the ongoing marketing activities approved in the Marketing Plan
  • Manages the Agency of Record (AOR) contract, setting priorities, ensuring expenses align with budget and ensuring an annual performance assessment
  • Negotiates and oversees contracts with General Sales Agents
  • Establishes partnership agreements with Destination Canada and other contractors for shared marketing programs or for international marketing initiatives
  • Monitors performance of marketing initiatives and directs day to day implementation to ensure maximum return on marketing investments
  • Prepares funding applications for additional marketing resources, and oversees implementation of additional marketing programs to meet requirements of contribution agreements
  • Ensures quarterly and annual reporting to funding partners for all marketing initiatives are prepared to the specifications and timelines required in partner funding contribution agreements;
  • Oversees research projects undertaken as part of marketing initiatives from time to time.

Skills Needed:

  • Knowledge of the territorial, national and international tourism industry, marketing trends, and techniques
  • Ability to develop and manage complex marketing plans with complex budgets and budget spreadsheets;
  • Strong analytical abilities with respect to marketing program performance metrics and related data and industry trends;
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills and proven public speaking and presentation skills;
  • Ability to negotiate partnership agreements and manage relationships successfully to ensure the delivery on commitments by business partners and contractors;
  • Ability to manage people for high performance teams, coaching staff to grow organizational capacity;
  • Ability to work in a cross cultural and multicultural setting
  • Excellent interpersonal skills

Qualifications:

The level of knowledge, skills and abilities required to deliver all aspects of this position are commonly acquired through a diploma or undergraduate degree in marketing or business administration, combined with at least five years of experience in a marketing position with a Destination Marketing Organization, Government tourism office or private sector business. Equivalencies will be considered. Must have experience supervising staff. Knowledge of the NWT's Tourism products and marketing initiatives is considered an asset.
