JOB SUMMARY

We are seeking a Philanthropy Writer to join Surrey Hospitals Foundation's team to inspire and steward donor investment. Reporting to the Chief Development Officer, the Philanthropy Writer will be a dynamic storyteller - developing effective and compelling donor centric content that engages and inspires our donor audiences.

This is a role for a versatile self-starter with lots of natural curiosity about health care, sharp critical thinking skills, sound editorial judgement and sensitivity to complex storytelling. While the role involves a lot of head-down research and writing, the Writer must also be a seasoned collaborator who is able to work with colleagues in all parts of the organization, and to build relationships with all stakeholders.

The Writer will work collaboratively with stakeholders to identify story opportunities and lead end-to-end story and content development. They will play an integral role in managing various writing projects from conception to completion with a focus on cases for support, donor impact/stewardship reports, Annual Report, and grant applications.

This is a terrific opportunity for a creative, motivated, and strategic storyteller to work with a dynamic and growing team to create communications that engage, inspire, and delight partners and supporters within the Fraser Health region.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Writing and Donor Stewardship (85% of time):

  • Donor communications: Develops and edits donor communications, including content for our Annual Report, fundraising case/campaigns, impact reports and donor stewardship collateral.
  • Interview skills: interview key stakeholders, including doctors/health care providers, donors, and grateful patients to develop content.
  • Campaigns: Contributes to the development of donor stewardship, engagement, and fundraising campaign plans and content.
  • Grants: the opportunity to submit annual grant applications, and fulfillment reports.

Project Management, Planning, and Measurement (15% of time):

  • Contributes to the organization's planning, annual fundraising, and donor stewardship plans, as well as project communications plans.
  • Contributes to the measurement and evaluation of content and campaign performance and generates insights.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Undergraduate degree or college diploma in journalism, professional writing, communications, and/or equivalent work experience in a non-profit environment.
  • Minimum of five years of experience in the field of writing and editing.
  • A proven track-record of creating effective written communications for diverse donor audiences.

  • Can collaborate effectively and build understanding and consensus in groups
  • Strategic and critical thinker with excellent editorial judgement and persuasive writing skills
  • Demonstrates excellent listening skills and an ability to successfully receive and respond to feedback
  • Proven ability to engage with and distill complex and technical subject matter into plain language communications
  • Proven ability to adapt tone, register and level of information for a piece of writing depending on the audience
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills, with the ability to handle multiple projects concurrently, set priorities, and remain flexible
  • Passion for storytelling and ability to convey a sense of urgency, dynamism and impact
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Well-developed interpersonal and verbal communication skills
  • Well-developed research and fact-checking skills; able to evaluate the factuality and accuracy of information sources
  • Familiarity with Microsoft 365 and MailChimp
  • Experience working in a healthcare non-profit is an asset
  • Experience with ethical storytelling best practices is an asset

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • This is a Full Time permanent position.
  • This position is in-house at the Surrey Hospitals Foundation office located at Surrey Memorial Hospital.
  • Hybrid option available.

SALARY

$65,000 to $75,000

  • Salary to commensurate with your experience and skills;
