The Canadian Museum for Human Rights (CMHR) is a national museum dedicated to the evolution, celebration and future of human rights. It is the first national museum in Canada to be built outside the National Capital Region. Located in the heart of Canada in Winnipeg, Manitoba, the CMHR rises from the Prairie earth at The Forks, which has been a meeting place for over six thousand years.

ABOUT THE ROLE

The Canadian Museum for Human Rights (CMHR) is centred around the idea that respect and understanding of human rights can serve as a positive force for change in the world. The Senior Graphic Designer will support our collective efforts to build a workplace culture that is inclusive, equitable, innovative and focused on inspiring action.

Reporting to the Manager, Creative Services, the Senior Graphic Designer is responsible for conceptualizing and developing design solutions across multiple platforms, including web, mobile, interactive and print. This role is crucial in maintaining a consistent and effective visual presentation of the Museum's Core, Temporary and Travelling Exhibition Programs, individual exhibits, environmental spaces, marketing, wayfinding signage and departmental design support. This person will ensure all designs meet CMHR's inclusive standards for inclusivity, accessibility and official languages.

The incumbent will be a strong and thoughtful communicator, critical thinker and innovator who will bring a collaborative approach to their role.

What you will do

  • Contributes to a culture that promotes respect, equity, inclusion and innovation and models anti-racist and accountable behaviours.
  • Develops a framework for graphic design that sets standards, styles and procedures, facilitating the work of both internal staff and external vendors in typesetting and graphic design projects.
  • Provides guidance and direction to the team, both internal and external partners, to maintain consistency with our vision and design principles and to optimize the use of available graphic design resources.
  • Designs innovative and creative conceptual ideas and layouts for spatial, case and artifact layouts, graphic and print designs, as well as web, mobile and interactive exhibits for CMHR's various exhibition programs.
  • Adapts graphics for incoming/loaned and in-house-produced exhibitions, ensuring they meet CMHR's inclusive and universal design standards, while overseeing the consistency and quality across different media.
  • Coordinates the use of CMHR's logo and brand standards across all platforms to maintain clarity, consistency and effectiveness in communications, closely collaborating with cross-departmental teams.
  • Liaises with graphic designers, media producers and multimedia specialists to ensure services and solutions meet CMHR's visual design standards; oversees the production of diverse media to ensure accessible, inclusive and effective public engagement.
  • Manages design assets, maintaining design standards, performing quality assurance tests and providing mentorship to junior design staff while staying up to date with emerging technologies and best practices in design and new media.
  • Stays informed and on top of design trends, technology, media and methodologies

What we're looking for

  • A college diploma in Creative Arts (Graphic Design) or a related field and at least five years' experience in an in-house creative department or design firm, or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
  • Commitment to human rights principles, including respect, equity, inclusion and dignity for all.
  • Extensive expertise in design and graphic production, including typography, audio, video, multimedia and spatial design.
  • Advanced proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, After Effects, Premier, Final Cut Pro and Acrobat) and working knowledge of 3-D design software (e.g., Sketchup, VectorWorks, AutoCAD).
  • Knowledgeable in web, social media, print publishing standards, design principles and colour theory.
  • Effective communication skills across verbal, written and visual media, with experience designing in both of Canada's official languages.
  • Strong presentation skills and ability to manage multiple projects to deliver high-quality results under tight deadlines. Strict attention to detail.
  • Proven track record in coordinating activities, solving issues with stakeholders and applying innovative approaches to media production management.
  • Current on emerging technologies in graphic and multimedia production, ensuring modern and efficient design outputs.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft 365 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams)
  • Demonstrated ability to be highly creative and adapt to customer needs daily by incorporating constructive feedback.
  • Strong collaboration and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong time management skills, with the ability to work under pressure and prioritize.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience working for or providing service to a museum, cultural institution or similar entity.
  • Experience working with 3-D animation and motion graphics.
  • Knowledge of best practices in the domains of usability and accessibility and in user-centred designs.
  • Ability to communicate proficiently in both official languages.

  • Work is in an office environment; may require working off-site at various locations for video/image production or other projects
  • May require long periods at a desk in front of a computer

  • Occasional long hours of standing or being on one's feet in gallery during install.
  • Travel may be required
