The Opportunity

Reporting to the CEO, the Vice President, Marketing and Communications (VP) is responsible for creating and overseeing the implementation of the communications, marketing strategy, with a focus on lead generation, for Edmonton Global. The VP will serve as a steward of the brand and ensure the brand message permeates all materials and communications. The VP is also a key lead in supporting effective communication with the shareholders ensuring they feel supported as a community in their investment attraction activities.

The VP will be responsible for developing and implementing communications and marketing programs in support of achieving Edmonton Global's strategic goals and consistently delivering brand messages to international business investor clients and key partners regionally and internationally.

This role is responsible for providing leadership, strategic direction and operational guidance to the Marketing and Communications team. The focus will be on supporting the organization's core mandate of Trade & Investment as well as regional collaboration, storytelling and information sharing with shareholders to support Edmonton Global's mandate outcomes for increasing global competitiveness and Investment Readiness. The VP will oversee a team of two direct reports and several indirect reports focused on communications, marketing and shareholder engagement.

Key Roles & Responsibilities

  • Build the annual communications and marketing calendar; develop and manage the annual marketing budget.
  • Working with the senior leadership team, lead the creation, development and implementation of the Edmonton Global marketing strategy.
  • Lead, oversee and guide the marketing and communications team as they develop and disseminate materials to support and enhance the Edmonton Metropolitan Region value proposition.
  • Develop and maintain a trusted relationship between the shareholders and the Edmonton Global.
  • Become the point of contact to raise organizational awareness regionally and internationally; capture the achievement of Edmonton Global and find ways to showcase the success.
  • Work closely with the senior leadership team to maintain, evolve and manage Edmonton Global's brand strategy and execution across all channels and touchpoints.
  • Lead the design and production of the annual report.
  • Work closely with the Investment and Trade team to align marketing and communications plans and activities with specific lead generation goals.
  • Review and approve all marketing and communication materials to ensure that Edmonton Global's brand is consistent and presented appropriately to target audiences.
  • Represent and maintain the Edmonton Global and Edmonton Metro Region brand in all materials and communications.
  • Develop and manage Edmonton Global's brand guidelines and standards; ensure consistency in messaging and brand identity, including presentation and other templates, logo usage, colour palette, acceptable imagery, messaging, tone of voice, etc.
  • Provide brand stewardship and ensure consistency of messaging and brand alignment across all marketing and communications channels and materials-website, social media, press releases, video and photo galleries, client-specific materials, etc.
  • Provide regular reporting, insights, and analysis to track ROI on marketing and communication investments.
  • Develop and maintain relations with relevant media outlets and channels.
  • When required, assist the Board Chair and the CEO with media relations and speech writing.
  • Maintain an ongoing awareness of regional value propositions, assets and regional communication and marketing strategies.
  • Consult with the regional Economic Development Network and municipal, provincial and federal counterparts concerning communications and marketing strategies.
  • Set performance standards for the team and provide ongoing coaching and support.
  • Role model a culture of teamwork, accountability, collaboration, regionalism and client-centricity.

The Person

Qualifications & Education Requirements

The ideal candidate will have a university degree in communications, marketing, public relations, business, or a related field. The candidate will have a relevant background in marketing program development, communications, and social media with demonstrated experience at the senior leadership level. This experience should ideally include working within complex environments involving multiple partner groups, including elected officials. Ideally, they will have worked in a Board governed organization. Experience in economic development and investment attraction would be seen as a strong asset.

This role requires a values-based leader who brings creativity and the drive to think beyond traditional approaches. The candidate should possess exceptional communication skills, both verbal and written, along with strong presentation and networking abilities. Critical thinking skills, adaptability to fast-paced and dynamic settings, and comfort in a start-up environment are essential. Additionally, the candidate must demonstrate a collaborative approach to working with teams, consultants, and external stakeholders. They should also have proven experience managing professional teams and be comfortable with public speaking. An appreciation and understanding of global economic trends will further enhance the candidate's impact in this role.
