The Toronto Region Immigrant Employment Council (TRIEC) is seeking an experienced Senior Manager, Strategic Communications to lead TRIEC's marketing and communications work and elevate the organization's brand.

TRIEC helps employers capitalize on the skills and experience of newcomers to the Greater Toronto Area and helps newcomers secure work in their field of expertise.

In partnership with corporations, individual supporters, community organizations, and governments, we work to remove barriers to the labour market and to support the retention and advancement of newcomers in the workplace.

The TRIEC Senior Manager, Strategic Communications is responsible for developing and implementing TRIEC's communication and marketing strategy. This position reports to the Chief Executive Officer and oversees the work of a dynamic team of four communications and marketing colleagues.

Compensation: $80,000 -$85,000 per year plus employer paid benefits package

Hybrid work arrangements: TRIEC supports a hybrid work model of 2 days in the office and three days working remotely.

Role Summary:

The Senior Manager, Strategic Communications will have a comprehensive understanding of communication strategies and a track record of successfully leading teams in achieving organizational goals. The candidate will have excellent interpersonal and leadership skills, the ability to inspire and guide their team effectively, fostering a culture of intellectual curiosity and learning. The Senior Manager, Strategic Communications will be a strategic thinker, adept at developing and implementing communication plans that align with broader organizational objectives. The role will be highly skilled in stakeholder engagement, and media relations. They are adaptable, staying abreast of non-profit sector, workforce development and immigration news and emerging communication technologies to ensure the organization remains at the forefront of effective communication practices. The ideal candidate combines creativity with analytical acumen, demonstrating an approach to communication that effectively tells the story of TRIEC's impact and builds on our capacity for thought leadership.

Key Responsibilities

Strategy and management

  • Develop, execute and evaluate TRIEC's overall marketing and communications strategy
  • Develop and manage the marketing and communications annual workplan/editorial calendar and budget.
  • Oversee all activities of the marketing and communications team, including tracking progress across all areas of communications, identifying areas for improvement, and assigning work.
  • Monitor and analyze all marketing and communication activities, preparing reports for funders and TRIEC Board of Directors.
  • Work with TRIEC senior managers and senior leadership team on strategic planning, brainstorming and new concept development.
  • Manage internal requests for marketing and communications support, ensuring all program marketing projects align with TRIEC's brand and marcomms priorities.
  • Develop team roles and responsibilities in response to the organization's needs.
  • Carry out day-to-day supervision and feedback, identifying professional development opportunities and completing performance reviews.
  • Serve as custodian of the TRIEC brand, ensuring that all communications adhere to TRIEC's brand standards and convey key messages.

Brand Equity

  • Monitor and evaluate emerging immigrant employment issues and lead on the development of key messages in response to issues relevant to TRIEC's work.
  • Identify and evaluate new engagement opportunities to promote TRIEC and take part in conversations with employers and the public about immigrant employment issues.
  • Plan and lead implementation of audience research.
  • Undertake brand listening exercises to monitor the performance of TRIEC's brand, and take action as required.

Knowledge mobilization

  • Design and lead the execution of integrated marketing and communications campaigns to promote TRIEC's research and thought leadership.
  • Work closely with the Senior Manager, Research and Evaluation to develop messaging and communications materials relating to TRIEC's research products, and ensure maximum reach and impact.

Event management

  • Oversee the planning of TRIEC's major events, ensuring high-quality professional events that reflect the TRIEC brand and values.
  • Set themes for TRIEC events in accordance with strategic and research priorities.
  • Manage the agenda for the event; plan content; recruit and brief speakers, presenters, and MC.

Thought leadership and editorial direction

  • Proactively monitor sector, workforce development and immigration news, build a culture of learning to support thought leadership across the communications team.
  • Build an editorial calendar and develop a content pipeline. Oversee the development, production and distribution of content across all TRIEC's channels, including TRIEC websites - writing copy, managing budgets, timelines and supplier relations.
  • Write and edit compelling thought leadership pieces for high stakes audiences.
  • Research, write and prepare speeches and presentations for TRIEC's CEO, board members, and other spokespeople.
  • Provide editorial support to other teams, as required.
  • Sign-off and edit public-facing materials, as required.

Other communications duties

  • Work with the Manager, UX and Digital to manage TRIEC's websites, setting objectives for the site, identifying areas for improvement and contributing to development projects as required.
  • Work with the Manager, Content and Public Relations to advise on TRIEC's public relations strategy and public relations activities.
  • Advise on TRIEC's fundraising and business development activities, ensuring they are in line with the TRIEC brand.
  • Collaborate with other IECs and organizations to lead or support the development of advocacy and campaign-related materials and activities, as required.

Qualifications and experience

Essential qualifications and experience

  • Post-secondary education in communications, public/media relations, marketing, journalism or related field.
  • Minimum seven years' progressive work experience with at least two years in a management role.
  • Knowledge and understanding of a broad range of areas in marketing and communications, including digital marketing and media relations; the ability to keep up with current trends and apply them in your work.
  • A high level of organizational and time management skills, the ability to prioritize tasks, detail oriented.
  • Proven event management experience, preferably corporate events.
  • Strategic vision and capacity for long-term planning.
  • Ability to balance meaningful consultation with executive decision-making where necessary.
  • Knowledge and understanding of effective marketing tactics and how to develop and execute successful marketing and communications plans.
  • Experience of delivering marketing and communications campaigns in a research-focused environment.
  • Political acuity to anticipate and respond to issues in the media with sensitivity and timeliness
  • Excellent writing, editing and presentation skills.
  • People management skills and the ability to draw strong performances from a team.
  • Experience liaising with suppliers, consultants, and multiple stakeholders at all levels.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, and the ability to think on your feet.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite of programs and Adobe Creative Suite.
  • An awareness of the issues immigrants face in finding appropriate employment.

Desired qualifications and experience

  • Experience with CRM application (e.g., Salesforce, Mailchimp, Hubspot) is highly advantageous.
  • Knowledge or experience of effective B2B communications tactics.
  • Experience of working in a non-profit environment.
  • Experience with WordPress and an understanding of basic HTML.
  • Budget management experience.
