Position Overview

The Marketing Manager reports to the Vice-President, Strategic Initiatives, Partnerships and Engagement, and works closely with other units at the Calgary Chamber, and its members.

The Marketing Manager creates, implements, measures, evaluates, and adjusts communications and marketing plans, campaigns, and programs to increase brand awareness, promote member engagement, and attract prospective members to the Calgary Chamber. Working closely with other team members, the Marketing Manager will develop compelling internal and external content for members, the broader business community, and events; support marketing functions (ads, social media, website); and support event management during peak periods.

This role manages the marketing team, including marketing and creative specialists, delegating tasks and ensuring timelines are kept and deliverables are on time. The Manager will work with their team to develop growth plans, supporting the team to take ownership over their own work, while providing guidance and mentorship to ensure the highest quality work. They will also manage any freelancers or contractors contributing to marketing and brand efforts: monitoring their work, having regular touch points, and reviewing invoices.

The Marketing Manager is required to function in a fast-paced environment and have the ability to manage multiple projects at any given time, with potentially competing deadlines. Strong understanding of and experience in writing for marketing collateral, ads, website, social platforms, speaking remarks and event programming is a must.

This position is a temporary parental leave coverage role for a term of up to 16 months, with an anticipated start date in mid-May to allow for overlap with the incumbent.

Key Responsibilities

Marketing and Communications

  • Develop high-level marketing strategy to support all aspects of the organization-social, direct outreach, email marketing, advertising, print and digital assets, etc.
  • Create comprehensive and robust communications and marketing plans that promote and support the overall business objectives at the Calgary Chamber
  • Build a content marketing strategy and calendar to coordinate marketing specialists and freelancers in producing regular content, featuring members and Chamber initiatives
  • Identify, research, write and proactively produce content that can be utilized in advertising, social media, email campaigns, website, and collateral for member engagement and solicitation
  • Write and edit content with and for Calgary Chamber members
  • Create content that boosts the overall Calgary Chamber brand while also creating a sense of ambassadorship internally amongst staff, and externally amongst Calgary Chamber members and the broader Calgary business community
  • In consultation with leadership, develop content partnerships with aligned businesses and organizations to increase awareness in the business community while expanding SEO efforts
  • Be the liaison between the Calgary Chamber and the marketing leads at other chambers across the country, to establish cross-promotion and best marketing practices

People Management

  • Oversee marketing staff, including creative and marketing specialists and coordinators, giving deadlines and ensuring they're met, to contribute to the overall objectives of leadership and the organization
  • Help staff create growth plans to ensure ongoing skill development and engagement with their work
  • Encourage staff members to take ownership over pillars of the overall marketing plan, guiding through experience but allowing them to thrive, with continuous education and improvement
  • Provide leadership, guidance, and direction to the team, supporting them with questions and helping set strategy and vision

Brand Management

  • Ensure brand standards are met and cohesive across all outward-facing materials in all departments
  • Oversee the brand guidelines document, as well as other key documents, to help the Chamber understand our brand inside and out
  • Keep up-to-date on brands related to the Calgary Chamber, including design and content trends

Membership Support

  • Develop comprehensive materials that support current member engagement and prospective member solicitation
  • Write content for membership collateral that supports the overall member experience
  • Identify, research, write and proactively produce content about our current members that supports the overall Calgary Chamber brand and prospective member solicitation, including member profiles, features, blog posts, and other content as required
  • Copy write or edit content on behalf of our members for social media, blogs, the Pulse Newsletter, and any other tasks as required

Event Support

  • Work with the Director, Events & Partnerships and team to create the events calendar and integrate complementary marketing and content strategies utilizing these plans
  • Create compelling content to support the creation and promotion of Calgary Chamber events
  • Develop content for event programs for email marketing, website copy and social media
  • Support the Events team during peak periods with event preparation, set up, registration, day of support and other duties as required

Project Management

  • Effectively manage multiple communications and marketing plans simultaneously
  • Utilize KPls to track and measure the success of campaigns and programs and utilize creative solutions for identified areas for improvement

Qualifications and Requirements

  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in both marketing and communications
  • A university degree in marketing, communications or related field is required
  • Demonstrated leadership experience, including experience leading or guiding a team
  • Demonstrated experience developing marketing and communications strategies, including plans, goals, KPIs, and metrics
  • Demonstrated excellence creating and executing effective communication and marketing plans, campaigns, and programs
  • Demonstrated experience using digital advertising, social media and website tools is required
  • Demonstrated experience in copy writing and creating compelling communication pieces for a wide variety of audiences and businesses
  • Ability to interview, write, edit and proofread
  • General understanding of event management and event best practices
  • Ability to provide mentorship to other staff members
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Experience with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word, Dynamics)
  • Experience with Wordpress, Google Analytics, Google Adwords, social media management tools such as Hootsuite, Sprout Social, or Metricool, and design tools such as Adobe Creative Suite would be considered a significant asset
