Webby Awards 2024: What to Take Away from the 28th Edition?

The winners of the 28th edition of the Webby Awards were announced on April 23rd. Here are some highlights to note among the long list of winners and nominees.

Since 1996, the Webby Awards have recognized individuals and organizations that have distinguished themselves on the web and social media.

Once again this year, a multitude of nominees competed in nine major categories and several dozen sub-categories. Two awards are given in each sub-category, one voted on by a panel of judges and the other via public votes.

As is the case every year, several celebrities were nominated. Among them, actors Timothée Chalamet and Ryan Gosling each won an award in the same category, as did Michelle Obama for The Light Podcast, which can be heard on Audible. The Light Podcast, in fact, won a total of five Webby Awards. Amazon’s audio creation platform was also nominated 16 times this year at the Webby Awards, the most nominations behind PBS (20) and Warner Bros (18).

In addition to Michelle Obama, the film Barbie also won a significant number of awards, six in total, all in the major category of Advertising, Media, and Public Relations.

Kara Swisher Recognized for her Career

This year, the Webby Life Achievement Award was presented to American journalist Kara Swisher. A technology expert, Swisher has worked with the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times, in addition to engaging with top tech figures through her podcast Recode Decode. She is also the founder of the website Recode, dedicated to new technologies.

Three other Special Achievement awards were presented this year. Actress Julia Louis-Dreyfus is the winner of one of these awards for her podcast Wiser Than Me. This podcast rose to the top of the most popular podcasts on Apple’s listening platform and remained there for a total of 29 consecutive days.

Canadians in the Running

In addition to Ryan Gosling, other Canadians were in the running. This includes influencer Madison Tevlin, who won three awards for Down Syndrome is the Least Interesting Thing About Me.

The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) was nominated in several categories. It won an award for Reporting 101: Misinformation. CBC Kids launched this project last year: a Minecraft map allowing students to explore a virtual world and investigate a rumor while developing critical thinking skills related to misinformation.

Finally, it is worth noting that the Montreal-based studio Felix & Paul was nominated for the best virtual reality headset experience for Space Explorers: Blue Marble Trilogy.
